Okay. This is the coolest idea I've had in a while.

Have you ever been to a gallery opening? Have you ever hosted one?

Leaving Dakota is an episodic photo set. If the images are re-arranged, the story changes, and the story ends ambiguously and we may be missing events from the middle.

As a gallery show, Leaving Dakota is very small. It's 25 4x6 images and because of that, it can hang in unconventional spaces, like your hallway, or a parking garage, or the common room of your dorm. So here's what I'd like to do.

I want to send Leaving Dakota on tour, and wherever it gets hung, during the opening, I want the people there to take another photo and place it in the story, something that advances the plot or something that confuses it, adds new characters, or continues old ones. Then I'd like you to pack up the whole show (which fits in a small envelope), along with your new photo and mail it to the next person so they can continue it.

If you'd like to host an art opening & photo shoot for this, Drop me an email and Intern Monkey addieplum will coordinate the schedule of who gets what when so you can plan for your opening.

Specific information about space and hanging requirements:

1) The show is very compact. In a gallery you'd want about 20 feet of wall space to show it, but it will all fit on a door and can go up with museum putty or tape. You can scatter images across different walls in different your house and let people find them as they wander about nickering up the wine and cheese.

2) You can re-arrange the images in whatever order you want to come up with your own narrative.

3) Your own photo needs to be 4x6 printed on photo paper -- I recommend your local 1 hour lab. You can add that anywhere in the story you want and when you mail the show out, include your image. On the back of your photo put your name, what town you're in, and your email address so we can track the story as it goes along.

4) Are there prizes for the best gallery setup? OF COURSE!

5) "What if I want to host the show but I don't want to add a photo? Can I do that?" Of course. No penalties for not adding to the photo set.

6) "Can you send along some of the props from the shoot so we can incorporate them?" Sure, why not.

7) "Can I do this if I'm not in the US?" The last time I posted at midnight asking people to participate in something I got a zillion replies from Europe and New Zealand because that's where everybody woke up first, so I'm kind of setting myself up for this. Yes, you can do this if you're not from the US, we might have to have one set of photos per continent to make it go faster.

Questions? Questions? That's it. Jet me an email or comment letting me know WHERE YOU ARE and lets get this going.
