Our nephew was out from Wisconsin this week, he's a sophomore in high school, which is a fun age where everything is exciting and the world is full of wonder. We played a lot of pinball and visited our friends Ryan & smileitsme and went with them to visit "Wild" Bill Guarnere, who entertained us all with tales of parachuting into France on D-Day and fighting his way to the Ardennes where he lost a leg in the Battle of the Bulge. I showed Bill a printout of War Paint and he went through page by page and read out everybody's name and what branch of the service they were from. "Oh, look," he'd say, "a Marine. He sure looks like a Marine, Tom Murtha."

A few days of splendor and joy in amongst the hubbub and preparations for this weekend's Big Project.

Here's Bill, taken with a Panasonic GF1 and the 20mm f1.7 lens, wide open at about 1/120 400 asa.

FYI there is a typo on your war paint website- steve the paratrooper, it says he started his service in 1867, I think you meant 1967. :)

Re: What pin is that?

It's "Grand Lizard" - a 1986 Williams machine. it's pretty nice. four flippers, magna-save two playing areas, multi ball play. i've had it three years and still don't have one of the high scores.

Re: What pin is that?

I wouldn't recommend anything earlier than '85 -- there's a reason they're cheaper -- the all mechanical ones are super complex to repair and it will break -- it'll break relatively frequently. When I bought mine it came with a lifetime phone support contract and they told me that there's nothing about it that can break that I can't fix with them over the phone -- and that's been the case so far (it comes with a soldering iron built inside the box!) -- and don't get a pinball game without some type of tech support or you're just going to be scratching your head wondering why one flipper's weaker than all the others all of a sudden. I'd say expect to pay $1000 minimum -- get one that's been reconditioned already -- it'll save you money and aggravation in the long run -- you probably know most of this already from having an old arcade game in the house. (I want a sit-down star wars like i want air to breathe).

Re: What pin is that?

Have you seen King of Kong by the way? One of the best documentaries i've ever seen.

Bill is too cool. I'd love to have a chance to talk to him and hear all about his life.

Oh, I'm so glad Bill Guarnere is still with us. Next time you see him, tell him a voluptuous redhead sends a hug his way, will ya?

He'd love it. A couple times the phone rang and he'd pick it up and say "I can't talk right now! I got a coupla dames in the place!"

Next time I'm in Philly, I should finagle to make good on the hug. Forget Roswell, I wanna (gently) squeeze our favorite veteran!

Wonderful! He has so much character in his face! I hate it when people get plastic surgery. Why would you want to lose the story of your life written on your face?
