For those of you in the U.S., be aware that the Occupy movement is global, including several throughout new Zealand.|
My local one is OccupyWellington which has been going over 3 weeks and has support from the local council who are leaving public toilets open 24/7 for the occupiers to use, and local businesses are making showers available as well. The occupiers are being fed through donations of food, which they are sharing with any passers by who desire such. The postal union has given them a PO Box and they have a bank account, so seem to be digging in for the long haul. tatjna has blogged regularly about them, as well as about other occupations worldwide.
MSM initially attempted to paint the occupiers as scruffy hippies at odds with the law, despite the occupiers being extremely cooperative with several events that have taken place in the vicinity of the occupation, and maintaining close relations with the council. The MSM coverage has mellowed a little, but is still not comprehensive or entirely favourable.
Elsewhere Occupy Dunedin was served an eviction notice by Dunedin City Council, which the police refused to enforce on the grounds that they were in a public space and being relatively peaceful (well, at least not a public nuisance).
