It was for SCIENCE! [Feb. 19th, 2013|07:57 am]

IN WHICH SCIENCE IS PERFORMED

I first became aware of Geologist Matt Kuchta's high speed (slow motion) videos when I saw a video he'd made of Neil dumping a box of bees into a hive at 2,000 frames per second. I started following him on Facebook and watched his ever more inventive videos of things like liquid nitrogen blowing up trash cans filled with rubber ducks and more obvious geologist things like rocks being smashed by hammers. Matt Twittered asking if I wanted to do any photo-stuff while I was out at the Castle and I suggested that we could hit Dill Hero in the face with a snowball at super high speeds. Dill wasn't too keen on this, but novelist Kelly McCollough said he'd be happy to do anything for science.

Matt showed up with physicist Todd Zimmerman and the most amazing camera setup.

Here's a behind the scenes photo that Elyse took of the shenanigans.

The camera is constantly capturing video as soon as you arm it, but it can only save four gigabytes of data, which translates into about two seconds. After that, it takes about 10 minutes to save to a hard dive, so everything needs to be pretty much properly set up or you're going to waste a lot of time.

So, without further ado, here's Matt and Todd's super slow motion video of me, Dill, and Kelly getting blasted in the face by snowballs.

After that we tried opening a container under great pressure -- in this case a foamy can of beer that I stab with a knife that Dill Hero bought from a pirate at a Ren Faire.

This is all epically SCIENCE.

In the time it took us to do this, Joan of Dark had knit a glove for Neil's zombie hand.
