zombie zombie zombie [Apr. 7th, 2013|10:26 pm]

Some time ago, after I started running and
before my grievous sports related injury I signed trillian_stars and I up for a zombie 5k in Philly. You run, zombies chase you, that sort of thing.

In the interim I broke my tibia and was relegated to "aqua jogging" in the pool. I wasn't sure if I'd be able to do the zombie run but, slowly, day by day, my recovery went on and my doctor had me doing things like "run 10 minutes, walk 2, run 10, walk 2, run 10, walk 2" and similar things and day by day I did these and my leg failed to hurt and also failed to swell up like a pumpkin and I became somewhat hopeful that I'd actually be able to do it.

Last night I finally decided I'd do it, but I wouldn't run the whole way, I'd maintain the schedule my doctor and I had set, which was 12 minutes running and 2 minutes walking -- I realized I could do three miles this way and walk my broken leg over the finish line.

So at 5:00 in the morning, much to the chagrin of The Claw who wasn't scheduled to wake me for another half an hour, we got out of bed, got dressed, and headed down to Roosevelt park for the Zombie Apocalypse.

There were lots of great costumes (My favorite shirt said "NO BRAINS, MOVE ALONG") and some really, really fancy zombie makeup done by pros on pro zombies whose job it was to lurch from the woods (or wherever) and eat your brains. The set had crashed cars, chemical spills, fog, and ... well, all sorts of zombies.

About 3/4 of the way through the race one of the zombies yelled "TRIIIILLLLLLIIIIAAAANNNN!!! BBRRAAAIINNZZZZ!"

It turned out to be bona fide Real Runner & fitness blogger Allie Harcharek who writes the Navel Gazing fitness blog. We met up after the race and went off for a fancy photo shoot and brunch and beers.

Anyway. We made it through, my leg didn't snap in two. And I'm a real runner now. I have a number, I ran a race.

That was made of 100% pure cool. Congratulations, runner guy!

(After my similar bone-related setback, I've returned to my Zombies, Run! 5K program. Finished week two today. It looks as if things get a bit tougher in next week's workouts, but I'm still hangin' in. And I've promised myself a Runner Five t-shirt if I make it through Week 4.)

I am 'so' envious! There is no 'Run For Your Life' event scheduled in my area at all. The nearest is in Seattle, WA. [I'm in Idaho].

Definitely looks like a whole lot of fun. Glad you both had a good day, and that your tibia is healing well!

That's so cool! And I'm glad your broken bone stood up to fleeing from zombies.

Utterly cool, in every way :-) Great news on your being back to running health, and what an awesome event!

This is such the awesome sauce. I love the pictures of Ms. T's face when she's not aware of being photographed and gleefully evading zombies.

There's a similar Zombie Run where, when you enter the race, you get a belt with five strips of fabric, and the zombies try to rip off your fabric strips. If you make it to the finish line and all 5 strips are gone, you're "dead," 1-4, varying states of infected. Did they do this in your race?

This is exactly why I wanted to take up running: I wanted to be able to do fun things with my friends and go places I'd never been enjoyably. I'm just going to have to wait for Zombie Yoga.

(108 sun salutations: slow down for too long and the zombies get you).

Go you! And go Trillian, though she seemed awfully happy for someone being chased by zombies....

Thats a promo photo I took of Amanda Palmer for her production of Cabaret a couple years ago. There may still be some in stock, though I'm not sure. Check her website.

If you want another shot at it, the Delaware Mud Run (5K) in September is going to be a zombie run this year. http://www.delawaremudrun.com/mudrun.php

Yay! Your first number, and a memorable race to boot.

I stalked a black bear with my car my first race. It was in the NC mountains, and I got there really early. Driving around the hospital campus, I saw a big adult black bear. "If I tell anyone, they'll cancel the race!" my prioritizing self thought. The bear noticed me there, in my car. And casually walked away. So I followed. It crossed a street and looked at me. I half-crossed and looked at it like, "yeah, buddy, I'm watching you. You better keep moving." So he ambled along. And I followed. And he thought, "forget that crazy two-leg in the metal box on wheels, I'm going back into the forest." And he did.

And I did my first 5K. And I did not finish last.
