Emily the Spider update [Jun. 7th, 2015|05:36 pm]

Today was an interesting day in spider news. Emily's web is gone. Zup. Vanished. Emily's still in the same spot but both her original and her replacement webs are now gone. Does she still eat? Is she waiting for something to come by so she can grab it? I've no idea.

I did manage to set up a tripod and get closer to her than I ever did before (part of this is on account of my next door neighbors throwing out a milk crate that I can now stand on and get closer to her).

And upon examining the super-close close-ups I discovered that the tips of her legs are rainbow colored. Cute, adorbs, dainty little rainbow feet.

Not sure what she's going to do next -- if she got rid of her web herself or if something else tore down, or ate it. I'll let you know what happens.

I shot this one with a micro four-thirds Panasonic Lumix GX1 and a Leica 45mm f2.8 macro lens.

It's the end of the university school year. All sorts of shit gets thrown out. I had a buddy in college who furnished a whole apartment with college cast-offs.

I love the Emily pictures and updates!

How big is her body now? I can't get a sense of the scale. Is that big furry abdomen the size of a regular pea? A chick pea? A "berry" from Crunch Berries cereal? (I'm scrambling to think of universally recognizeable smallish spheres!)

Emily's size

I photographed Emily next to a penny last night so you can get an idea how big she is (or how small) she's much smaller than a pea, and smaller than a lentil bean.

Re: Emily's size

Knowing how small she is makes her seem impossibly beautiful in all those close-ups. It's like those sweaters knitted from thread on sewing needles... http://indianapublicmedia.org/arts/tiny-knits/

SquueeeeeeeeEEEEEEeeeeee!! She's so teeny! This somehow makes her about a zillion times more wonderful.

The photo makes it look like she's supporting her abdomen with the hind pair of legs. In fact, it makes her look like a spidery gymnast, balanced on the third pair and the front 4 legs held out for balance/grace. Nice.

She's actually hanging upside down from them, it just looked wrong to be looking at her upside down, so I flipped the earth over. But I love to think of her as a little gymnast -- because now that I think of it she really is.
