A few weeks ago my father called me to say that the access road to the forrest where I spent much of my youth had been blocked off and that in a few years the road would be taken over by undergrowth and trees and the place, as we knew it, would vanish. He suggested that I come to New Jersey and we would walk the entire road one last time. I hadn't been there in twenty years, but my mind retained a map of every twist and turn in minute detail.
