writing fan letters to book designers

I wonder if Linda Lockowitz has a google alert set up....

A few months ago I was in a bookstore and I picked up a new Ursula K. Le Guin novel and flipping through it I thought the typesetting was just beautiful, which isn't something that even a designer often thinks of a novel. So I looked in the front of the book and saw it was designed by someone named Linda Lockowitz. I wrote her name down in my journal.

Well, last night, I started reading yswilce's incredible book Flora Segunda: Being the Magickal Mishaps of a Girl of Spirit, Her Glass-Gazing Sidekick, Two Ominous Butlers (One Blue), a House with Eleven Thousand Rooms, and a Red Dog which was set in a beautiful renaissance humanistic font I'd never seen before called "Requiem" (you can buy it here, it's $248 for a two computer license) based on designs made in 1523 by Ludovico Vicentino degli Arrighi. I first noticed the uppercase Q but then the question mark, the numbers and then -- the ligatures -- sweet barking cheese -- the beautiful ligatures, it makes me want to find excuses to write words that contain "ct". Anyway, so I looked in the front of the book and guess who'd designed it? Linda Lockowitz. This set about some midnight googling. She doesn't seem to have a web page, but she also designed The Time Traveler's Wife. So, Linda, if you're out there, here's some fan mail.

We had a lot of zucchini that was about to go to the enemy so last night Roswell and I set about stuffing and baking it. Ros spent a lot of the time sitting on the open door of the dishwasher supervising, occasionally huffing down some of the wild rice. She didn't seem too impressed when the final product came out of the oven, but that's fine, because trillian_stars liked it.

Today's the last day to vote in the LJ advisory board elections. I can't imagine that you haven't seen this and voted for me already, but if you haven't -- please do I'm about 5 % points behind where I need to be.

On the Road Again....

This afternoon my calendar popped up to remind me that I'm giving the 2009 Photography Colloquium at ICP in Manhatten, TOMORROW, which I'd agreed to do six months ago, when I thought The Big Book of Who Killed Amanda Palmer would be out by now and I'd just throw a bunch of books in a box and talk about it. But that is not to be. So tonight I threw a bunch of slides into the thing that you throw slides into and tomorrow I shall wing a talk, and it will probably be better than had I spent days thinking of it, because it won't be overly rehearsed. This is how things go.

Tonight we watched DiG! about the Brian's Jonestown Massacre and the Dandy Warhols, both of whom I know next to nothing about, but I found the film gripping.

Do you have a favorite Dandy Warhols or BJTM album?
