49th and Sansom, March 28, 2006 12:50 pm
At about 12:50 p.m. the body of 15 year old Raheed Muhfooth was found dead in a stairwell in front of the Middle years Alternative School at 49th and Sansom; the victim of multiple gunshots to the torso.
More from the Echoes of Life project here.
can't tell if i love or hate the project. but it certainly makes me think about philadelphia. damn that city of "brotherly love"
What a fascinating project. As morbid as it may sound, I look forward to seeing you expand on it.
I live in DC and am very conscious of the crime surrounding my neighborhood, as well. Bizarre to be walking down the street and realize that you just casually passed by the spot where someone lost his life.
disturbing to see the numbers rising annually... :(
It can happen if there is a rise in the local population.
It can and has happened here for a single reason, a drug gang wanted to move in and conquer territory. It was a bad move on their part but it did take some time for the locals to convince them of that. It seems to work in cycles. http://www.fbi.gov/ucr/ucr.htm
I'm not sure if they will be breaking it down as finely as they did up to 2005 but 2006 is still 'preliminary' and lacking in fine details.
You know I love these, but I thought I'd say it again. :)
High creep factor for this project. It's interesting to see the murder rates side-by-side on your site. I noticed the dip in 2002. I wonder if that's a post-9/11 effect?
A drawback of legalized firearms? I always wondered would murders be a rarer case if gun ownership was prohibited. Or everything except murder weapon would be pretty much the same?
that's for someone other than me to answer -- i have no idea. but the last scene i photographed was a 16 year old stabbed to death with a sword 4 blocks from my house.
It's a pity people don't have some kind of virtual testing area, a computer program which models human behavior under the given circumstances. You describe your country (size, population, political system etc.) and then see what happens if you implement a certain law or start a war with your neighbors and so on. Unfortunately, it's impossible to make such a program, at least nowadays.
And, yes, people have a genius for killing each other in the most cruel ways. I have a friend who works in morgue, he once told me about a girl who was stabbed to death and burnt... Personally, I'd rather be shot.
P.S. Every time I write a comment to you it turns out to be sad ;(
