Well -- there's no time like the present ....
We went to Fredericksburg VA and crashed with ZarwinDevolve, then got up at 7:00 a.m. and spent the weekend with the men and women of Engine Company 14 of the Occoquan Woodbridge Lorton FD. We rode in the firetruck, went out on calls with them, and had the most wonderful time photographing them.
This is Chris, one of the firefighters. They were all upbeat and happy people despite what they see every day on the job. I've really not met kinder people, they were wonderful to us.
Trillian took this photo of me -- there are two jump seats in each side of the back of the truck (five point harness d00dz) Trill and I rode on one side, two firefighters rode on the other. There is NO room inside the truck -- the space is maybe 24 inches wide, people talk with head sets -- when the truck is racing down the street to an emergency all you can hear is the sound of the engine, and the sirens, it's hard to hear anybody even a foot away.
The whole experience was amazing. You'd go from sitting on the sofa, watching t.v. or reading a magazine, and then KAZOOM! KAZOOM! -- this klaxxon would go off and everybody would leap from wherever they were, race down the hall, jump into the firetruck while a loudspeaker blared out the emergency, we'd race down the street, around turns, realizing that seconds may mean the difference between someone living or dying. Wow. it was really amazing.
then we stayed with my old college buddies Dan and Holly in Maryland and had a wonderful time. Dan's actually a rocket scientist and one of the most intelligent people I've ever known. It was great to see them again.
dan and holly wanted to go see a Persian band, Trill and i were beat, but we went anyway, and we're standing in the back of the hall and someone comes running up to us going "Kyle?! Kyle?!" it was Kazoogirl! "Ding0's playing tonight!" she said -- and sure enough, there he was on the stage, playing the Tuba in a Persian band to a room full of belly dancers.
and trillian ....
