Big News

Two years ago I met novelist Elizabeth Bear (aka matociquala) on an escalator in Canada and said “You’re Elizabeth Bear!” – which wasn’t all that miraculous because she was wearing a name tag – but we talked on the trip from the third floor to the first floor of the Palais des congrès de Montréal about doing some sort of vague something based on the themes of Time Travel, Levitation, and Madness. We parted ways at the bottom of the stairs and during the following year I sent Elizabeth 12 photos and she wrote a story, in twelve parts, that ties them all together.

It's now available as a series of 12 post cards, each with an image on the front and a story on the back.

I'm tickled pink that wilwheaton has called it "... one of the coolest, most beautiful things I've ever seen."

They start at $12 but we realize you might want to hoard one for yourself and mail others out, so there are deals for getting more than one. You can buy them and get more info here.

I would post the text from the back of this card, but it's really too brilliant and it might give too much away. I'm really in awe of Bear's ability to create a magical world from bits and parts and have it be cohesive and heartbreaking -- and 80 words at a time.

I'm really excited about this -- it's a beautiful little creature that wouldn't be here today if so many tiny things hadn't happened. Do something awesome today, even if it's small; it might grow up into something bigger.

I've been collecting postcards for around 30 years... There's no way I could *not* buy a set or two!
I can't wait to get them!

I do look forward to stories of people mailing them to friends one chapter at a time.... I've been holding this story bottled up for so long, I'm very happy to see it about to fly off into the world.

I just want to say that your constant positive affirmation is so wonderful...as an artist, those little urgings to make something beautiful and do something awesome really give me a kick of extra motivation. Thank you. :]

Thank you thank you. I really think that being surrounded by an overachieving peer group is one of the best things a creative person can have. You don't want to be the only person at show and tell with nothing to talk about. I've lucked out in that regard and it really helps get you going. like your icon.

I couldn't agree more. I'm still searching for my group, but I have found at least another artist who is just as driven as I am, and that has improved my art dramatically! And thank you :].

keep at it. no artist survives in a vacuum. (I've been watching Battlestar Galactica enough to know that nobody survives in a vacuum, even cylons.)

I agree so much! But also, one of the things I love about your art is that you put so much value and focus on collaboration. I honestly believe that collaboration is the highest form of art, and that it yields some of the most amazing results. In my own art, I've been astonished at what we could come up with when another artist was involved. No artist survives in a vacuum, but the other side of it....it's not just about survival, you know? It's about the joy of broadening your perspective with another's viewpoint and really having human connections and just...

lmao, sorry, I get gushy about this stuff. I guess....I take my primary inspiration from the Beats, and they were always in cahoots even if it was just hours of deep conversation that later produced books or poems or refined ideas or whatever. I long for a group like that and I think that I will find them. So your posts on collaborative efforts and the beautiful projects you make with these other artists are music to my soul. :]

"I really think that being surrounded by an overachieving peer group is one of the best things a creative person can have."

I don't think that this statement could be any more brilliant, motivating, or TRUE.

This is so brilliant! Would you mind if I shamelessly stole this format? Robot-postcard-childrens'-stories really need to happen...

Steal away! I'm sure we're not the first people to do a story on post cards. Be sure to either include Cthulu or monkey knife fights.

I like to include Cthulu in everything somewhere - you know, just in case!

you should make Cthulu earrings that don't hang from your ear, instead, they're crawling out of it.

and then you should sell me a set.

Oooh now that's a good challenge - how to make them comfy without constantly freeing themselves and falling out. This is happening. I was about to make a tentacle drawer pull knob anyway - the more tentacles the merrier.

An amazing accomplishment indeed! I am definitely going to look into sending them in 12 parts in 12 months to my friends who live in Kyrgyzstan. The entire village gathers to read my letters and I include interesting things I come across here in America. I'm happy to say your work with Elizabeth Bear will be appreciated around the world! Thanks!!

I realized one day in college that the poem you don't write today is the poem you never wrote.

Can't wait to see your thingie!
