I've been photographing a lot of people on wheels lately and it seemed kind of weird that I hadn't photographed any skaters, skateboarders that is, since I photographed Tony Hawk and Bob Brinquist for the X-Games waaay waaay back in 2001. I got a chance yesterday to break that streak and try out a bit of what I'd learned in the intervening years on Giancarlo in North Philly.

There's certainly something about fearlessness in the face of certain injury.

I was really impressed by the skaters interaction, between kids who were eight or nine years old being judged, and really, only known by their skill set by people three or four times their age, how peers aren't chosen by anything other than how good you are.

Shot with a Nikon d800 and a Sigma 12-24mm with a Nikon sb800 on a cord at half power, hand held to camera left.

Anyway, I had fun. Philly skaters should drop me a line. Fo shizzle.

Cool. Takes me back to when I used to skate and read Thrasher Magazine. I still own a few copies of that mag from the 1990's.

Yes, I love the skaters interactions, too.

My little boy (age 4) was watching skaters in our local park and then took his pedal bike (that he had just learned to ride without stabilisers) over a little jump...to the nods and approvals of the *WAY* bigger kids.

A true meritocricy, perhaps?

Doood!!!! That's Chaz Villette! (Who is also a sk8r, or at least, used to be. Before he got busted for drafting a truck, and his current boss heard about it. Heh.)
