So this week I did the cover for the Philadelphia Weekly magazine which featured journalists turned novelists Solomon Jones and Karen Quinones Miller, both of whom set their work in Philadelphia (article here). They interviewed one another about their life and work.
I wanted to photograph them against a Philadelphia backdrop that was both elegant and gritty. There's an alley at 13th and Chancellor that I often pass and that I'm really in love with -- it looks elegant and at night, especially after it's rained, it's spectacular with the street lamps.
I knew I wanted to light it with three lights, a main spot, a background light and a rim light. Actress Leah Cevoli (Robot Chicken / On the Road With Leah / etc) actually is staying in Philadelphia for the moment and volunteered to act as "assistant". We'd met at the Philadelphia Geek Awards.
We lit up the alley, Solomon and Karen showed up, Leah shot a behind-the-scenes video, Jayray (or is it JayRay?) edited it together. Check it out!!

After the shoot Leah, trillian_stars and I went over to vist Rodney Anonymous from the Dead Milkmen who lives in a fancy rock star castle nearby. Much good time ensued.
